Because it’s spring break, I'm
currently blogging from a local coffee shop back home. The coffee of the
evening is what they call a caramel creme which is a white chocolate latte with
a hint of caramel. It is a drink that is subtly sweet unlike the WAM BAM smack
you in the face sweetness of Starbuck’s lattes :).
This past week of riding was
disappointing. On Monday, it freaking
snowed of all things so all we did was jog in the barn. On Tuesday, the
ground and track conditions were still very poor so it was more of the same.
On Wednesday we were finally able to
go out on the track. We were instructed
to do a nice easy gallop which is supposed to be about 18 seconds a furlong
(1/8th of a mile). I went slower (20-23 seconds a furlong) than I was supposed
go. Mr. McCarron told me that judging speed and times is one of the hardest
things while riding, because every horse has a different stride and it’s hard
to feel how fast you’re going. It’s a
talent you just have to develop. I plan on buying a stop watch so I can check
myself and start developing my timing.
On Thursday it rained. Although we couldn’t go on the track, we did
go the field to ride. It was quite an adventurous ride and the horses where
feeling good and slightly skittish because of the storm. It was something
different and added a twist to things so I enjoyed my ride in the rain. As we galloped around the field, Mr. McCarron
gave us our riding instructions from the comfort of his jeep over a walkie
talkie. He couldn't help but let a few chuckles rip through the radio as he
stayed dry and warm while we froze and got wetter and wetter.
Friday was a great ride. I did everything right! I had a fabulous time
and it was a great way to end the week with the exception of our ride back to
the barn. Yankee flipped out because a
car went flying past us on our way back home. I was over-confident and wasn't
prepared for her to blow up so I came off but didn't get hurt. Next week’s blog
will be a little bit different since I was on spring break. Because I have a
love and passion for food and love unique restaurants I'll go over my Sunday
morning outings to a few of my favorite places I've visited
Have an awesome week
Jesse
